A Day in the Life: Embracing the Island

Living in San Cristóbal, the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, offers a unique blend of adventure, natural beauty, and an island lifestyle. Here’s a glimpse into my typical day.

Morning Routine

My day begins around 6:30 or 7:30am, depending on if I exercise in the morning or not. My favorite run is to La Lobería, where I can soak in the coastal views and maybe catch sight of sea lions basking in the sun. Some days, I opt to run around town, surveying the local life.

By 8am, my host mom has breakfast prepped and on the table. Breakfast usually consists of eggs, a fresh roll, seasonal fruit (usually papaya, banana, or mango), and a cup of tea, accompanied by juice (tomate de arbol, orange, or pineapple).

A Scenic Walk

By 8:30am, I’m on my way to the university. The 20-25 minute walk is not just a commute; it’s a chance to connect with nature. The path along the bay offers views and encounters with the island’s wildlife. On some mornings, I leave a little earlier, allowing myself extra time to pause and appreciate the marine life, consisting of birds, iguanas, crabs, and sea lions.

Class

Classes typically run from 9am to noon. When we’re not on a field trip, professors give lectures about the unique ecosystems that surround us. Our professors are passionate, and the environment fosters discussions.

Lunch

At noon, I join friends for lunch at one of the affordable restaurants across from the school. For just $6, you can get a soup, a main course (protein, rice, small salad, beans/lentils), and a juice of the day. Sometimes we visit another small restaurant up the street that sells cheap cheese and chicken empanadas.

Afternoon Adventures

Post-lunch, we usually head to the beach. Whether we’re chilling in the sun, snorkeling among the sea lions, or tide pooling along the rocks, the afternoons are all about making the most of our time on the island. On days when we volunteer, we venture into the highlands from 2 to 5pm, contributing to various community projects and conservation efforts.

Family Time

As the sun begins to set, I head home for dinner with my host family, which is around 7pm. Chatting with my host family is a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration.

Weekend Getaways

Weekends in San Cristóbal are often spent soaking up the sun on the beach (Playa Mann) near the school or at Punta Carola. Occasionally, we embark on hiking adventures to Playa Baquerizo, snorkel at La Lobería, or take a taxi to Puerto Chino for a change of scenery. Each weekend is an opportunity to create lasting memories.

Living the Dream

Life in San Cristóbal is a beautiful balance of learning, adventure, and community. Each day is a reminder of the experiences that await, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and the vibrant wildlife.
