Ecuador is a vibrant country filled with stunning landscapes, rich culture, and countless adventures. Whether you’re exploring bustling cities or serene natural wonders, here are ten must-visit places that will make your trip unforgettable.
- Parque La Carolina - Located in the heart of Quito, Parque La Carolina is a charming green space perfect for relaxation. With a variety of food options nearby, be cautious with street food.
- Mercado Artesanal Mariscal - This traditional market in Quito boasts over 50 artisan shops. It's an excellent spot for souvenirs, but be sure to stay in groups for safety. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere as you browse unique handcrafted items.
- La Gran Cascada del Río Pita - This stunning waterfall is accessible via a 6-7 mile hike. Although you’ll need to take an uber to get there, keep in mind that drivers are often reluctant to go due to the remote location. When returning, consider using the van service available on-site. Note: Wi-Fi access is limited, and most Ubers may not accept the ride back.
- Cotopaxi & La Páramo - For nature lovers, camping near Cotopaxi offers spectacular views and pristine starry skies. For my tropical ecology class, we stayed at Hacienda El Porvenir. I also enjoyed a night camping closer to the Cotopaxi base, which was organized by IES Abroad - Quito. Be prepared for chilly temperatures; the cold can be surprisingly intense!
- Tandayapa Cloud Forest - As part of an ecology class, I visited the Tandayapa Cloud Forest and stayed at Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge. The area is busy with hummingbirds, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts. The cozy accommodations offer amazing views of the lush cloud forest.
- Baños - Known for its adventure activities, Baños is a must-visit. My friends stayed at Mama Tungu Hostel, which featured a pool, hot tub, and delicious food. Booking adventures through the hostel, my friends enjoyed rafting, exploring nearby waterfalls, and soaking in thermal baths, all in a lush setting that contrasts with Quito’s urban landscape.
- Archaeological Park in Cochasquí - For history buffs and llama lovers, the Archaeological Park in Cochasquí is a treasure. Here, you can explore burial sites and ancient pyramids. I even had the chance to feed llamas salt and witnessed the birth of a baby llama!
- Ilalo Volcano - Starting from a small town 30-45 minutes from Cumbayá, the hike up Ilalo Volcano is rewarding. The trail features 14 crosses, culminating in a large cross at the peak. As you traverse farmland, you'll encounter cows and beautiful scenery. It's a moderate to strenuous hike, taking around 5-6 hours.
- Teleférico and Rucu Pichincha - For breathtaking views of the Andes, take the Teleférico up Rucu Pichincha. The hike can be strenuous due to the altitude, so it's essential to give yourself time to acclimatize before attempting this adventure.
- Quilotoa - Although I didn’t have time to visit Quilotoa, it comes highly recommended by professors and fellow travelers alike. This stunning crater lake is a sight not to be missed, with its turquoise waters and picturesque surrounding landscapes.
Ecuador is a country with natural beauty and cultural richness. Each of these destinations offers a unique experience that showcases the diverse wonders of this incredible land. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or history, Ecuador has something for everyone!
