Katy Heidenhofer, our October 2016 Ambassador of the Month, shares her tips for funding study abroad and how she’s used her time in Germany to help others on her campus.
Katy is a German & Business Finance major at Austin College and studied on the IES Abroad Berlin Language & Area Studies Program in Fall 2015. On campus, she’s president of the German Club and involved in the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.
IES Abroad: What advice do you have for other students on funding their study abroad experience?
KH: When looking for funding, start looking early, because IES Abroad has scholarships you can apply for even before you get accepted to your program. Look on the IES Abroad website because they have lots of available scholarships, and your school may have some, too. So start early and look everywhere because there are lots of funding opportunities to study abroad.
IES Abroad: What do you wish you had known before you went abroad?
KH: I wish I had known how easy and cheap it was to travel while in Germany. If I had known that I would have traveled around even more, though I still did a fair amount of visiting friends and family. After I graduate, I plan on getting my CPA and becoming a tax accountant, and one day traveling back to Germany!
IES Abroad: What have you gained from being an IES Abroad Ambassador?
KH: Being an IES Abroad Ambassador has allowed me to share my abroad experience with new and current students, while also helping students reintegrate after studying abroad. I have been able to be more involved with my school’s study abroad programming and have helped them improve on it to make it better for future students wanting to study abroad.
Thanks, Katy!
