Held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from January 26-28, 2016, our South American Student Affairs Conference brought together staff from IES Abroad Buenos Aires, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, and Santiago Centers.
The Conference covered a variety of topics: intercultural competence and communication, student health and safety, student conduct, technology systems, Comprehensive Orientation and Reentry (CORE), student housing, crisis management, field trips; managing student conflicts, and numerous case studies.
Our goal with this Conference, and similar regional training sessions we’ve held in recent years, is to gather staff from similar locations together to share best practices and discuss our current student affairs protocols. It also provides an opportunity for our overseas staff to mentor newer members of the IES Abroad Student Affairs staff and to make solid connections with their peers at Centers in the same region.
Since the creation of the IES Abroad MAP (Model Assessment Practice) for Study Abroad in 1999, we continually strive to assess and analyze our programs in accordance with these guidelines. This comes in the form of language learning and instruction standards, cultural immersion, and student health and safety.
