When students are considering studying abroad in Spain, opportunities to study Spanish may be at the top of their list. Our Study in Salamanca Program offers plenty of options for Spanish practice—from IES Abroad’s intensive Spanish language orientation course to courses in Spanish at the University of Salamanca.
In Fall 2015, our Salamanca Center started offering three new Spanish language workshops:
- Spanish Writing Skills
- Spanish Speaking Skills
- Spanish Through Theater
Each workshop is 1 credit and is designed for four to eight students. The workshops are offered in both fall and spring semesters and have been very successful in helping students with their Spanish grammar and Spanish pronunciation. Students learning Spanish feel that the workshops have increased their language competency, as is highlighted in the following excerpts from workshop evaluations:
“I wish this was every day! I think the workshop taught me more practical Spanish than any other course. It should be required and meet every day.”
“The topics we discussed in the workshop were challenging and made me think and make educated conclusions all in Spanish.”
“I learned some important theater techniques, as well as how to apply my vocal training (enunciation, projection, intonation, etc.) to speaking Spanish, whether on stage or not.”
“This course taught me how to think on your feet while speaking Spanish.”
In December 2015, IES Abroad Salamanca hosted its first theater production for the Spanish Through Theater Workshop. The students’ Spanish plays were screened for host-families, professors, orientation leaders, mentors, and staff.
