In 2015 we set out to award more than $3 million dollars in study abroad scholarships and financial aid for the 2016-17 academic year. We greatly exceeded our goal by awarding $4 million in financial aid for 2016-17–the most financial aid awarded in IES Abroad history! This is an increase of 42% from the $2.8 million awarded in the 2015-16 academic year.
We also reached another record, having awarded financial aid to 2,200 students–the most amount of students we’ve awarded to date–across 225 schools.
As part of our ongoing efforts to make study abroad more accessible and affordable for students, we updated our financial aid program for the 2016-17 academic year. During Fall 2016, our financial aid program offered:
- An increase in the automatic Public University Grants, from $1,500 to $2,000
- More semester need-based aid, up to $5,000
- More summer need-based aid, up to $1,000, including full-time summer internships
- More donor-funded scholarships, ranging up to $10,000
- An easier online application process
It is our mission to ensure that as many students as possible have the opportunity to study abroad. We understand that financial limitations can hinder a student’s chances of studying abroad, which is why we continuously strive to grow scholarship and financial aid opportunities for our students.
While we have awarded $25 million in financial aid over the past 10 years, and more than $50 million since our founding in 1950, we continue to look for new ways to increase accessibility, while enhancing the study abroad field’s highest standards of academic excellence and student health and safety.
