August 22, 2019

Whether it’s homestay life or academic workload, weekend travel or grocery shopping in another language, our student Correspondents probably have something to say about it. After all, they know what it’s like to study abroad!

We’re excited to welcome and introduce 67 Fall 2019 Correspondents who will be sharing their study abroad journeys through writing, photography, video, social media, and other creative mediums with friends, family, and future study abroad students.

Whether their stories are shared on IES Abroad Blogs, their Instagram accounts, or behind-the-scenes for our catalogs and other printed materials, our Correspondents provide on-the-ground insight and guidance to students preparing for their study abroad journeys.

Some of our new Correspondents have already started their programs, so we collected a few of our favorite quotes, pictures, and posts they’ve submitted so far:

Charlotte Bonsignore

“I will be frustrated sometimes, I will be sad sometimes, and I cannot control every aspect of my study abroad experience. Whether or not I let it define my semester, however, is entirely up to me; it's true that there may be challenges, but there's something to learn from both good and bad experiences when traveling. Even as I dread those bad experiences, I remain hopeful that they will help me grow as a person.”

From Pre-departure Anxiety? You're Not Alone! by Charlotte Bonsignore (IES Abroad Rome—Language & Area Studies | Penn State University)

Betsy Barthelemy

“I’m not going to learn more or less depending on how big my campus is, but the ways I learn may change. I’ve fallen into a routine in my small classes at Mac, generally know what professors expect of me, and know how to build the best kind of schedule given my extracurriculars, sleep schedule, and four-minute commute. This semester, all of that is up-in-the-air.”

From New Campus, New Country, New Habits—Predeparture by Betsy Barthelemy (IES Abroad Amsterdam—Social Sciences & Humanities | Macalester College)

Lexi Ross

“Take a deep breath. Not everything is going to work perfectly, but you are in the best hands, in a beautiful place, and as long as you want to make the most of your time abroad, you are going to have an amazing experience.”
