IES Abroad Welcomes New Shanghai Center Director

IES Abroad is pleased to announce that Qinbo (James) Gao has been appointed the new IES Abroad Shanghai Center Director, effective January 3, 2017.


Most recently, James has been the Director of the International Affairs Office (IAO) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)-Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF). He joined SAIF in 2009 as a founding member for the institution, which is a collaboration between the Shanghai Municipal Government (SMG) and SJTU.


James established the International Affairs Office at SAIF and has been responsible for key internationalization projects, including partnership development with governments and universities, international programs administration, overseas student recruitment, school marketing and events, accreditation and ranking. Among his achievements at the Institute is accreditation by the AACSB, achieved in a brief three years. 


Before joining SAIF, James worked at the Chinese Europe International Business School (CEIBS) as Accreditations & International Programs Manager. He started his career as an English lecturer at Tongji University, where he received “Junior Teacher Awards” in 1998 and 1999, based upon student voting and academic reviews.


James received his bachelor’s degree from the International Studies University in Xi’an, and his M.A. in Tourism Administration from The George Washington University School of Business. He is a candidate for the Doctorate of Education at the University of Nottingham (China Campus), focusing on practical research in higher education.


James succeeds Dr. Xiaojun Li, as Center Director of IES Abroad Shanghai. We are grateful for Xiaojun’s work, and welcome James into his new role.
