Studying abroad with IES Abroad offers students an invaluable opportunity to expand their study abroad experience through our course-related trips.

Last month, IES Abroad students studying abroad in Shanghai with the Shanghai - Economy, Business, & Society Program received the unique opportunity to visit Taiwan and explore its rich food, culture, and traditions. The week-long excursion, arranged with National Taiwan University, was filled with engaging academic and cultural activities.

Students attended meaningful and interactive lectures at the National Taiwan University where they learned about philosophy and Taiwan external relations. Students also had the opportunity to meet several local university students.

Throughout the fun-filled week, students visited various parts of New Tai Pei City, including Jiufen, a traditional Taiwanese district famous for its architecture and delicious food.

Students also participated in an annual Taiwanese lantern tradition in the Pingxi District. The tradition consists of writing wishes in Chinese directly onto traditional Chinese sky lanterns – called Kongming Lanterns – and releasing them into the sky. Tradition states that by letting the wishes fly it will make them come true.

IES Abroad students practiced their Chinese writing skills covering their Kongming Lantern with different messages such as, “I wish that everything goes well in my life,” and “I wish to have a lot of chances to eat all kinds of good food.”

The IES Abroad students also visited one of the New Tai Pei City’s most famous sites, the Yehliu Geopark, home to a number of unique geological formations. The students didn’t let the winter rain ruin their exploration of the park. They came prepared with full rain gear and smiles!
