In September 1950, 23 American students boarded the SS Vollendam to begin their journey to Vienna where they would spend the next year living and studying in the Austrian capital.
Celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2010, IES Abroad has since guided more than 65,000 U.S. students from college classrooms to the classrooms of the world, offering opportunities for U.S. students to expand their education, their careers, and their worldview on more than 90 study abroad programs in 32 cities around the globe.
IES Abroad has become a global leader in international education, from creating the first educational tool designed to evaluate study abroad programs, to building a $2-million-a-year financial aid and scholarship fund. As a not-for-profit organization, IES Abroad’s mission is to give students the best experience abroad possible and for 60 years, IES Abroad has dedicated its resources to fulfilling that mission. The students who embarked on that first voyage and students 60 years later say the same thing about their IES Abroad experience — that it fundamentally changed their lives.
Throughout the year, IES Abroad alumni and colleagues at the more than 170 colleges and institutions that comprise IES Abroad’s academic consortium will celebrate the occasion with events, publications, and a special 60 in 60 Alumni Video Contest. In addition, anyone who makes a gift to IES Abroad by January 31, 2010, will receive a copy of IES Abroad’s 60th Anniversary calendar, which features stunning photos by IES Abroad students.
We invite you to stay tuned throughout 2010 as IES Abroad honors its founding mission and celebrates 60 years of offering students the experience of a lifetime.
