For students interested in studying abroad in Spain, IES Abroad Salamanca offers Spanish language writing, speaking, and theater workshops to bring coursework to life.
This spring, students on our Advanced Spanish Immersion Program welcomed guest speaker Tony Gray, one of the most famous script translators in Spain, to Spanish Speaking Skills Workshop. As an audiovisual translator, Tony has worked on many blockbuster films, including Pan’s Labyrinth, The Impossible, The Secret in Their Eyes, and the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Tony used practical examples from his career to talk to students about the importance of avoiding literal translations. He also discussed dealing with registers correctly – determining when to use formal or informal words and phrases. Beyond his Spanish translation advice, Tony shared his experiences as an American living in Spain for more than 20 years. His mastery of both English and Spanish gave him the opportunity to live and work abroad – an encouragement to many students seeking to return abroad.
The Spanish Speaking Skills Workshop is one of multiple language workshops IES Abroad Salamanca offers. Other options include Spanish Writing Skills Workshop and Spanish through Theater Workshop.
