It is a great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Saskia Stachowitsch as the new Center Director of IES Abroad Vienna! Saskia will officially join the Center in January 2024

In a comprehensive international search involving an excellent pool of very qualified candidates, Saskia emerged as our top choice and we are delighted to have her.

Saskia comes to us with an extensive background in academics and management. She is a researcher, educator, and higher education manager with over 15 years of experience in academic and policy-oriented social science as well as teaching and mentoring at all curricular levels. Saskia holds a PhD and MA in political science from the University of Vienna and her research has been funded by several large grants from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Currently an Affiliated Scholar at the Central European University (CEU).  She has published widely on gender and security, military gender integration, the privatization of security, EU (border) security, feminist and post-colonial theories in international relations, and Jewish political history in Austria. She is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and co-editor of the Journal of International Relations and Development.

In addition, Saskia has held numerous prestigious positions which include:

  • Senior Research Fellow at Central European University (CEU).
  • Professor of International Politics at the University of Vienna.
  • Scientific Director of the Austrian Institute of International Affairs (OIIP).
  • She has also held postdoctoral positions at the University of Bristol and the University of California, Berkeley.

In the coming months, Saskia will be working with Morten Solvik, currently Dean for Central European Cluster and former Center Director of IES Abroad Vienna and Dr. Lee L’Hote, VP for Academic Programs, as she transitions into the new role.

Elisabeth Sekulin, who served as the Interim Center Director for IES Abroad Vienna, has been a trusted leader as we searched for a permanent Center Director. Elisabeth will continue in her role as Assistant Center Director and Director of Operations in January.

A warm IES Abroad welcome to Saskia!
