We're celebrating Black excellence year round and that comes with supporting and fostering the achievements of our students. Our IES Abroad Charles Merrill Jr. Scholarship fund awards up to $2,000 in scholarships each year to Morehouse and Spelman students and is a key component of the IES Abroad Diversity Initiative. Spring 2022 study abroad student and Merrill Scholar Michael Henry shares a sneak peek into a day-in-the-life during his time abroad with IES Abroad London. Also, be sure to watch our event featuring Michael and other Merrill Scholars - "Live From London: Meet the First Beneficiary of IES Abroad’s Charles Merrill, Jr. Endowed Scholarship."

Coming to the UK was a big culture shock, as it took time for me to get adjusted to life here. Each day, I am learning something new about the people, culture, and everything in general here and taking it all in. It amazes me that I am over 3,000 miles away from home and am across the seas.

Before coming abroad, there was so much that I did not know about myself, but since I have been here, I have discovered so many new things about myself. I view this as an experience of a lifetime, and I am excited to see what the last two months that I have here have in store for me. Interacting with different cultures and people is something that I plan to do in my career, so having this opportunity has paved some of the way for me. I know that when I return back to the United States. I will have a different perspective of the world as a whole, and I cannot wait to share my story with everyone.

Time to Rise

I start my day off at about 8:00 a.m., to get ready for the day. I want to make sure that I am up early so that I can prepare for class and get there on time. It took me about a few weeks to overcome jet lag, as I was experiencing this when I got here. The time difference still amazes me, as I am used to Eastern Standard Time.

Waiting at the Tube Station

After I finish getting ready for the day, I walk to the tube station to take the underground train to class. It usually takes me about 30 minutes by the underground to get to class. Using public transport to get around everywhere is something that I had to get used to, as I am so used to driving my car back in the States.

Time for Class

After I get off of the underground, I walk to class. My class is located in central London, so there are a lot of different shops and things around. I usually get to class about 15-20 minutes early, and am normally always the first one there. Class times are two-and-a-half hours, so I definitely had to get adjusted to the longer class times.

Lunch Time

When class is over, I usually go and have lunch. I like to try different foods, and I have been enjoying the food here. One of my favorite things that I have had for lunch was a Korean corn dog. My friends usually come with me to grab lunch.

First Exploration Stop

When lunch is over, I like to go out and explore different things in the city. This particular day I went out to the City of Westminster, and had a guided tour to show us around the area. The scenery was very beautiful.

Second Exploration Stop

Some days, I may choose to go to more than one place before I head back to my room, as I want to be able to take in everything that I can. The next place I went to was the London Eye. I was able to see many different views of the city while I was here. I came here with a friend, it was a beautiful view since we went at night.

Night Over

After a full day, I either take the bus or the underground back to my room. It gets dark pretty early in London. I enjoy seeing the different views each and every day that I’m here. Even while waiting for the bus, I get to see nice things in the area.
