As a juror for the Study Abroad Film Festival, Jäger emphasizes the importance of authenticity and depth in student-made films. He offers aspiring filmmakers advice on finding their niche, working hard, and building networks. A Sit-Down With Patrick Jäger

IES Abroad: Patrick, it's fantastic to have you with us today. Let's start by diving into your IES Abroad experience in Vienna. How did your time there influence your journey into the film and television industry?

Patrick Jäger (PJ): Growing up in Colorado, I had this innate wanderlust, and IES Abroad in Vienna opened my eyes to a world beyond my imagination. It gave me a deep understanding of people and their stories. This experience inspired me to connect people through storytelling, whether in TV, celebrity public relations, marketing, or consulting. It was about bridging the gap between unique experiences and universal truths.

IES Abroad: As a Study Abroad Film Festival Juror, you've had a unique perspective on student-made films. What elements or qualities do you find essential in a winning film submission?

PJ: Honest and depth are key for me. Many films tend to be surface-level travelogues, but the standout ones are imperfect, honest, and personal. They focus on struggles, personal challenges, and dispelling stereotypes. The best films are those where the journey becomes a backdrop, and what's truly important is the profound impact of a moment in time.

IES Abroad: You've been involved in successful TV shows like "Biography," "Behind the Music," and "Fixer Upper." How did your time abroad shape your creative approach to content development and storytelling in these projects?

PJ: The key to a successful series, for me, is a relatable story about real people. This focus started during my time abroad, where I learned to dispel stereotypes by connecting with people on a personal level. It's incredible to make a career out of telling these stories and understanding what makes us all similar.

IES Abroad: The path to success in Hollywood is known to be challenging. What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers and media executives just starting in the industry?

PJ: It's crucial to recognize that you're not the next anyone. Success is a combination of longevity, income, and passion. Find your niche, work hard, make a living, and most importantly, meet everyone you possibly can. Networking is a vital part of this diverse industry.

IES Abroad: Hosting a Film Festival must be an exciting experience. Can you share some memorable moments and how it has contributed to your passion for the industry?

PJ: Hosting is pure excitement for me. It keeps me connected to the passion that drives this industry, especially when working with young and open-minded filmmakers. It reminds me of the genuine enthusiasm that initially drew me to this craft.

IES Abroad: Reflecting on your career, is there a project or moment you're particularly proud of, and how did your study abroad experience contribute to that achievement?

PJ: Study abroad has shaped my focus in media, emphasizing the importance of sharing what makes us all similar. The perspective I gained from traveling to 40+ countries influenced my storytelling, whether developing shows for Travel Channel, HGTV, MTV, or digital and film projects. It's about learning from someone uniquely different and fostering a perspective our world needs today.

IES Abroad: With your background in television, how do you see international experiences and global perspectives shaping the future of the entertainment industry, especially in a rapidly changing media landscape?

PJ: International content is gaining prominence, with streaming services breaking down borders. As choices expand, viewers can engage with diverse perspectives. I hope that international media fosters empathy, changing how we treat others. The power of humanity is evident through these global narratives.
