Awards season might be over, but we're just getting started.

Each semester, a select group of students take on the role of IES Abroad Correspondents—bloggers, photographers, and social media storytellers who document their study abroad journeys in real time. Through breathtaking photos, thoughtful blogs, and TikToks that stop scrolls dead in their tracks, they capture what it truly means to study abroad.

Every year, we take a moment to celebrate the standouts: the storytellers who bring their experiences to life in ways that are fresh, bold, and deeply personal. And let us tell you, with all the incredible content out there, choosing winners is no easy feat.

We’re thrilled to announce our three 2024 Correspondents of the Year: Billy Greene (they/them/theirs), Clara Smartt (she/her/hers), and Dara Abimbola (she/her/hers). Selected from a talented group of 284 Correspondents, these winners stood out by sharing their journeys in ways that inspired, informed, and wowed us.

A huge congratulations to this year’s winners and our six honorable mentions! And to all our Correspondents—thank you for giving us a front-row seat to your adventures abroad. Here’s to more moments that make us dream bigger, explore further, and see the world through your eyes.

Shining a Spotlight on the Stars: Our 2024 Correspondents of the Year

📖 Blogger Correspondent of the Year – Billy Greene (Lawrence University | IES Abroad Auckland |Fall 2024)

“Billy contributed to IES Abroad’s Correspondent program not only through their beautiful use of the English language to convey emotion and intrigue, but also through their vulnerability and transparency. They told the stories of their time studying in Aotearoa New Zealand with the use of interpersonal relationships, a development of Kiwi slang and culture, and in a manner that makes their blogs a great resource for prospective students. Billy shared music and coffee recommendations, alongside a personal account of their experiences with romantic connection as a queer person in a different culture. Billy’s nomination for COTY showcases the value in vulnerability, relatability, and the impact that embracing the unknown can have on a person”

“Clara blew us away with her photos from day one, which resulted in her doing a correspondent feature, having a photo get selected as the cover of our South America catalog, and separately having another photo get selected as the main photo for Quito on our website. Clara showed us every piece of study abroad–from field trips, to hiking, to relaxing on campus, and even daily tasks like going to class or grocery shopping–each beautifully showcased with her impeccable photography skills.”

🎥 Social Media Correspondent of the Year – Dara Abimbola (Franklin & Marshall College | IES Abroad Milan | Spring 2024)

“Dara deserves to be "Correspondent of the Year" for her exceptional and inspiring contributions to the study abroad community. Dara’s content was not only informative and educational but also vulnerable, touching on a wide range of study abroad topics. She consistently delivered high-quality work, from a fantastic Milan center tour to deeply personal and engaging videos of daily life abroad. Her editing and production skills were top-notch, making it feel as though we were studying abroad right alongside her. Dara's content will continue to be a timeless resource, inspiring future students to embrace their true selves and find their authentic path abroad. Not to mention, she also created an original song reflecting her time at IES Abroad and incorporated it into an incredible short film submitted to our Film Festival!”
