Announcing Our New Programs for 2014-15!

We are pleased to announce our new summer and semester programs for 2014-15! Based on recommendations from our study abroad colleagues, student feedback, and the results of our own rigorous program evaluations and surveys, these new programs are designed to further meet the needs of students.

SUMMER 2014

Rio de Janeiro Summer – Sports & Society
What better place to study sports than one of the most active cities on earth? On any given day in Brazil students can see Cariocas running, surfing, swimming, kayaking, walking, and playing games like soccer, volleyball, and footvolley on the beach. With a range of sports-related courses, this program is designed to explore the many facets of sports and culture in Rio. Course topics will include exercise science, sports management, sports and culture, Portuguese language, and an internship seminar for those students who choose to have an internship. Internships offer a unique opportunity to explore the integration and impact of sports and exercise in Rio, as well as the marketing and management side of sports.

Buenos Aires Summer - Language & Argentine Studies
From the elegant and wide avenues of Buenos Aires’ urban center to the city’s diverse cultural attractions, Buenos Aires offers students a welcoming atmosphere for a summer studying abroad in the Southern Hemisphere. This program is designed primarily for students with a beginning or intermediate level of Spanish proficiency and it includes a core group of classes in English that explore contemporary Latin American society from a social science or business perspective. The program includes a unique Direct Enrollment option with English-taught classes at the Universidad de Buenos Aires for students from Colleges of Agriculture and the Biological Sciences.

Istanbul Summer – Bogazici University Direct Enrollment: Turkish Language & Culture
Imagine your students stepping out of their classroom on a summer afternoon onto a grassy hill overlooking the glimmering Bosporus, the strait that runs through Istanbul. Starting next summer, the beautiful Bogazici University campus can become their second home, along with the many cafés, bazaars, and winding streets of Istanbul. By directly enrolling at Bogazici University—Turkey’s most competitive university—for seven weeks over the summer, students can fulfill graduation requirements or try out a new discipline through a wide variety of course offerings.

Sydney Summer – Study Australia
It’s hard for students to sit still while they’re studying abroad in Sydney for the summer! This program makes sure they won’t have to—with engaging courses, field study opportunities, and organized cultural events, students won’t have a dull moment. Students can fulfill a graduation requirement or try out a new discipline—whichever they choose, they’ll learn more about Australia and themselves. In addition to their courses, students take an optional trip to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. A four-day field study trip to Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers Rock) is included in the program fee.

Sydney Summer – Internship
With an IES Abroad internship in Sydney, students work at a local business or organization for 25-30 hours per week, and enroll in an internship seminar. Internship placements will be based on students’ field of study, and might include: marketing, IT, engineering, science, sociology, general business, and non-profits. Students will spend their free time getting to know Sydney through IES Abroad-organized cultural events and an optional weekend trip to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

FALL 2014

Amsterdam Psychology & Sciences
This program has been specially designed to allow students to take courses in Psychology, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Computer Sciences at VU University Amsterdam (VU), as well as course offerings at the IES Abroad Center. While taking courses in your major at VU, you also have the chance to study alongside Dutch students at an internationally-recognized research university. The University will also offer events (in addition to those offered by IES Abroad) for students to get involved on campus as well as cultural events throughout the city.  Great site visits are also offered in and around Amsterdam, Maastrict, Rotterdam, and the Island of Texel.

More detailed information about these new programs will be available online in August.
