English: The other day I was walking around after work, looking for a cute place to stop for a bocadito and cafĆ© con leche, and a woman stopped me and asked me for directions ā she made a valiant effort to communicate with me in Spanish but once I recognized her accent I asked if she preferred English. She was grateful and asked me how to get to La BoquerĆa ā one of Barcelonaās best eats, a huge market with millions of options ā and luckily for me, I knew how to get there from where we were standing. It may sound stilly, but that moment made me feel like I could really call this place home ā if a stranger thinks I look like a local, thatās validation, right?
Iām happy to report that I really do feel like I know the city pretty well now ā Iām familiar with most of the neighborhoods and can give people recommendations, and even have a couple favorite spots. Last week a big group of us tried a famous sandwich shop called Bo de B (HIGHLY recommend) and took our food to Parc de la Ciutadella for a sunset picnic. The clouds blocked our view a bit, but the the purple and pink in the sky was a beautiful background for the night! We laid down our extra bedsheets and spent a couple hours pigging out on our delicious sandwiches, laughing nonstop about the most random things. I know Iāve said it before, but Iām really lucky to have found such a good group of friends here, this experience would not be the same without them.
I also went to a cooking class that was organized by IES Abroad on Thursday. There were 12 of us in Yvesās beautiful home ā he shares a rooftop terrace with his wife and adorable sons, and he was so welcoming towards us. His cooking skills are amazing, too. We made fresh gazpacho, pan fried cod fish with mushrooms and potatoes, and a spiced pear dessert. Every course was so delicious. Although each portion size seemed to small for all of us, we left completely full and satisfied. If you are ever in Barcelona and are interested in taking a market tour or cooking class, look up Yves Nicolier and give him a call, heās amazing! Iāve definitely been more adventurous with my foods here ā at home, I usually donāt eat fish and am not a big seafood eater, but here Iāve been open to trying everything and am surprising myself with my favorites (the cod fish we made was one of the best meals Iāve had here).
The day after enjoying that delicious meal, I left for Madrid for the weekend! Some of my good friends and fellow AKPsi brothers are interning there, so it was a must-go on my list. I had a blast following Ricky, Max, and Camille around for the weekend āthe Irish pub on Friday night, boating in El Retiro on Saturday, venturing to Kapital, and going to the Cathedral and Palacio Real on Sunday. Palacio Real was beautiful ā we spent the whole visit talking about what weād do if we were royalty and admiring the ceilings, chandeliers, and art on the walls. It was so interesting to see how different Madrid is from Barcelona even though theyāre just a couple hours away from each other!
EspaƱol: El otro dĆa, estaba caminando despuĆ©s del trabajo, buscando un lugar para tomar un cafĆ© con leche, y una chica me parĆ³ para pedir direcciones ā a mi! Trataba de hablar espaƱol, pero me daba cuenta que su acento era de los estados unidos, pues cambiĆ© a inglĆ©s y ella me daba muchas gracias. En el momento, me sentĆ un poco nervioso porque era posible que no conocerĆa lo que estaba buscando. Pero, afortunadamente ella me pido las direcciones a la BoquerĆa, que es un mercado a que voy frecuentemente. Este momento me sentaba que puedo llamar a Barcelona un hogar ā si una desconocida me piensa de aquĆ, Āæes vĆ”lido, sĆ?
Me gusta informar que me siento mucho mĆ”s conocida a la ciudad ahora ā pienso que conozco los Ć”reas diferentes, puedo dar alguien recomendaciones de ir, y tambiĆ©n tengo unos lugares favoritos. La Ćŗltima semana, un grupo de nosotros iba a una tienda de bocadillos deliciosos se llama Bo de B (le recomiendo MUCHO), y llevĆ”bamos nuestra comida al Parque de la Ciutadella, donde hacĆa un picnic durante la puesta del sol. Los nubes bloqueaban la vista, pero el cielo tenĆa colores vĆvidos como morado y rosa. PasĆ”bamos unas horas allĆ, riendo y comiendo.
El jueves, fuimos a un clase de cocinar de Yves a su casa bellĆsima. Tiene una terraza del techo, y hacĆa muchos bienvenidos a nosotros de su casa. Esta cena fue uno de lo mĆ”s deliciosas que he comido aquĆ. HacĆamos gazpacho fresco, bacalao con patatas y champiƱones, y pera especiada para el postre. Aunque los porciones nos parecĆan demasiado pequeƱos, todos nos sentĆ”bamos muy llenos al fin. Si vas a estar en Barcelona en el futuro, te recomiendo llames a Yves Nicolier para un clase de cocinar o un tur del mercado, es muy talento! Estoy orgullosa porque aquĆ he estado mĆ”s venturosa con la comida que como. Por ejemplo en los Estados Unidos, como pescado muy raramente y es lo mismo caso de los mariscos tambiĆ©n. Pero aquĆ en Barcelona, he tratado casi todo que estĆ” en el menĆŗ.
El dĆa siguiente la cocina sabrosĆsimo, me fui a Madrid para visitar mis amigos buenos y mis hermanos socios de AKPsi que estĆ”n trabajando allĆ por el verano. Fue muy divertido en Madrid. Ricky, Max, y Camille, me mostraban la ciudad de Madrid, y me gustaba mucho. Fuimos a un pub irlandĆ©s, al Retiro para manejar barcitos, el club del Kapital, la Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, la Catedral, y el Palacio Real. Fue muy interesante ver como Madrid estĆ” muy diferente que Barcelona, pero los dos tienen las semejanzas tambiĆ©n.
