Only a one-hour train ride from Madrid is the tiny town of Córdoba. Surprisingly, there is a lot to do there! First, we tried salmorejo, an authentic Cordoban dish similar to a cold tomato soup. We really liked it, especially when scooped with a piece of bread or eggplant. We explored the cute narrow streets, and visited la Calleja de las Flores - a little street with iconic flower boxes and a view of the bell tower. We walked across the Roman bridge, visited the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, and tried Cordoban empanadas. The most important feature of Córdoba is the mosque-cathedral, which we had been learning about in our architecture class. It is an impressive building and gorgeous on the inside (and the outside). It is known for its double arches of brick and stone as well as the large patio/garden area outside.

Another 30-minute train ride took us to Sevilla! It was so sunny and warm right away. In Sevilla, we saw the cathedral (the biggest one in Spain!), El Puente de Triana, La Plaza de España, and the Alcázar Real de Sevilla. The plaza is gorgeous with a river flowing through, and beautiful architecture, and we even got a flamenco show. It was so relaxing to walk around and soak up the sun. The Alcázar was amazing as well. We had an audio guide tour us around, telling us the historical significance of each room. It is massive, and the garden area outside is even bigger. The architecture and decor were incredible, and the outdoor area was beautiful. Later at night, we visited Las Setas de Sevilla - large, funky mushroom-like structures. In the day, they remain a cream color, and at night, they are lit up with a variety of fun colors. To my understanding, the Setas are purely decorative, and they are a must-see in Sevilla!
