This past weekend, our program organized an unforgettable trip to Morocco. We visited the cities of Tangiers, Assilah, Rabat and Chefchaouen. We experienced some of the more traditional tourist activities, like camel riding on a lovely beach and enjoying absolutely generous portions of couscous, but the trip was certainly planned to provide us with a deeper connection to Moroccan culture. I certainly feel that connection still, and I don’t think it is something I will ever forget.
One highlight for me was staying with local families in Rabat, which allowed us to experience Moroccan hospitality firsthand and learn about their daily lives. I got to play soccer with my host brother and walk around the shops and boardwalks with my host father. This immersion extended beyond our accommodations; we also had the chance to visit a traditional Arab bathhouse, known as a hammam, which is often a social opportunity as well as one for relaxation and rejuvenation. Another memorable part of the trip was the conversations we shared with local students. These exchanges allowed for a cultural exchange that went beyond typical sightseeing, enriching our understanding and respect for their way of life.
Reflecting on this trip is pretty difficult for me, especially so soon after returning. I feel as though words can’t quite capture the absolutely incredible experience. Instead, I’ve included some photos that might convey the essence of our journey more effectively. Below are ten of my favorite images from Morocco.
I feel incredibly grateful to have gotten the chance to get on that boat across the strait of Gibraltar. People have not been lying when they’ve said that this trip was life-changing.
¡Hasta pronto!
