Le Prime Due Settimane (The First Two Weeks)

Abito a Milano da due settimane! Mi piace molto questa città, però, l’inverno di Milano è più grigio persino di Ithaca, una cosa che non pensavo fosse possibile.

La prima sera, sono andata alla piazza del Duomo con la mia famiglia italiana. Quando ho visto il Duomo per la prima volta, non potevo dire niente. In breve, era surreale. Penso che sia una delle cose più belle che avevo visto nella mia vita. Ne farò certamente molte foto questo semestre.

Milano è molto diverso dalle città americane. Tutta la gente si veste elegantemente, e persino le donne anzione che vanno al supermercato sono più alla moda di me. È meraviglioso! Inoltre, ho scoperto che gli italiani guidano come pazzi, ma fortunatamente, i mezzi pubblici sono efficienti ed economici.

Mi piace tanto la mia famiglia italiana. Loro sono molto simpatici, ma non parlano molto inglese, dunque mi parlano sempre in italiano. Penso che sia una cosa buona, e spero che il mio italiano migliorerà velocemente. La mia madre italiana è bravissima a cucinare, e mi ha fatto il risotto, le paste diverse, la polenta, l’agnello, il pesce…Spero che non diventerò troppo grassa!

Ci sono molte bellissime chiese molto vicino alla mia casa, come Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso, la Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore, e la basilica di Sant’Eustorgio. È incredible essere circondata dalla bellezza antica e moderna, e questa città è piena di tutte e due. Sarà certamente un semestre meraviglioso.

I’ve been living in Milan for two weeks! I love this city, although winter in Milan is even grayer than that of Ithaca, something I didn’t think was possible.

The first night, I went to the Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) with my host family. When I saw the Duomo for the first time, I could not say a word. I can only describe it as surreal. I think it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and I’ll definitely take many photos of it this semester.

Milan is very different from American cities. All the people dress super well, and even the old ladies going to the supermarket are more fashionable than I am. It’s wonderful! Also, I’ve discovered that Italians are crazy drivers – but fortunately, public transportation here is efficient and inexpensive.

I love my host family. They’re very friendly and hospitable, although they don’t speak much English, which means they always talk to me in Italian. I consider this is a good thing; hopefully my Italian will improve quickly. My host mother is an amazing cook and has made me risotto (rice), various kinds of pasta, polenta (cornmeal dish), lamb, fish…I hope I don’t get too fat!

There are many gorgeous churches really close to my house, like Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, and the Basilica of St. Eustorgio. It is incredible to be surrounded by antique and modern beauty, and this city is full of both. This is sure to be an amazing semester!
