The day I boarded the plane to Chile, I left behind more than just my hometown. I stepped away from the familiar comforts of home and embraced the uncertainty of a new culture. The thrill of navigating an unfamiliar city, trying to decode a new language, and getting lost in the winding streets was initially overwhelming. But each misstep and detour became a lesson in resilience. I learned to find comfort in discomfort and to embrace uncertainty with an open heart and mind.
One of the most eye-opening aspects of studying abroad was the melting pot of cultures and perspectives that I gained. My classmates and friends come from all corners of the globe, each bringing their unique worldview and experiences to the table. From lively jokes over dinner to collaborative projects, I found my perspectives challenged and expanded. Learning to appreciate and understand diverse viewpoints broadened my horizons and has made me a more holistic member of society.
Living abroad taught me the value of independence and self-reliance. From navigating foreign currency to living in a stranger’s home, every challenge was a test of my ability to stand on my own. The initial struggle with tasks like setting up a bank account or finding a doctor turned into triumphs of personal achievement. Each obstacle overcome upped my confidence and made me more self-sufficient.
As I reflect on my journey, I realize that studying abroad was more than just an academic adventure; it was a transformative experience that shaped who I am today. The challenges, triumphs, and moments of growth have left an undeniable mark on my life. What started as a single dot on a map evolved into a mosaic of memories and lessons, each contributing to my personal growth. If you’re contemplating studying abroad, know that the journey will be as much about discovering yourself as it is about exploring new places. Embrace the adventure, and you might find that the greatest growth happens when you step beyond the boundaries of your comfort zone.
Some of my favorite memories from my time in Chile were some of the simplest moments. My classmates and I enjoyed getting empanadas from street vendors, taking walks between classes, dancing, and spending time studying in the coffee shop across from IES Abroad. My favorite activity of all was trying out different coffee shops! Some of my favorites include; the mocha from Sofá Café on Exequiel Fernandez in Macul. The iced chai from Pausa coffee shop on Dr Manuel Barros Borgoño in Providencia is one of the best I've ever tasted! Finally, the best matcha I have ever tasted is found at Café Secreto, 2 doors down from IES Abroad, make sure to try their avocado toast too! Although tasting different coffees may not seem as though it has anything to do with growth, but learning to find things that you love in your new home is one of the biggest parts of growth. Maybe coffee isn't your thing, but I challenge you to try as many new foods, drinks, and activities as you can.
