While Madrid has no shortage of great places to eat, relax, or have a drink, etc. it’s become evident to me that one place holds a special place in my heart and its none other than Buen Retiro Park, which literally translates to “Park of The Pleasant Retreat”.
Retiro seems like such an escape from the bustling city of Madrid, it truly does feel like you’re in another world. The park itself is full of lush green vegetation and has plenty of attractions for locals and tourist alike. The two most famous attractions are the Crystal Palace that holds changing art exhibits over the year and by far the most famous feature is the Monument to Alfonso XII. What’s charming about this monument is that you can row boats in the lake with friends, family or a significant other. The combination of the sun shining and the sounds of saxophones playing in the background in my opinion make it the best way to spend an afternoon in Madrid.
If you’re like me and like you’re alone time, it’s easy to find isolation, as the park is massive. To be honest I still don’t think I’ve ventured through the park in its entirety. If you do prefer to be closer to people that isn’t an issue either and you will notice upon walking in plenty gatherings of people who are enjoying a picnic or some drinks. Now that the weather is becoming even nicer I encourage you and all of my IES classmates to head to Retiro!

Born and raised under the bright lights of Chicago, I was under the influence that I had seen it all. After my first trip abroad I was hooked, and I realized I couldn’t of been more wrong. With a thirst for adventure I’ve set out to explore the unknown during my summers off from school. My travels have taken me from ancient pyramids in Mexico to remote rainforests in Costa Rica, and now Spain is next up on the destination list. I can’t wait for my time abroad and here I plan to document all valuable experiences and insights about my journey in Spain. Hala Madrid!
